ROME — Authorities say the upstate New York man suspected of killing the mother of his child and a friend who came to her aid is in serious condition with self-inflicted injuries.

Rome Police Department officials say 26-year-old Aaron Welch Sr. of Schenectady is under guard Wednesday at a local hospital. They say he used a sharp object to injure himself after fatally stabbing 22-year-old Stephanie Morrison and 31-year-old Shawn Kessler of Camden.

Police say Welch attacked Morrison in the doorway of her home as she returned from work early Tuesday morning. Kessler, one of two friends babysitting Morrison’s young daughter, rushed to help the woman and was stabbed. He later died at a hospital.

Welch was captured about five hours after the attack. Police say he hasn’t been charged yet.
