A Saratoga Springs man faces charges including vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated after police say he fatally ran down a woman as she crossed Ballston Avenue this afternoon.

Police said Paul Nicholson II, 28, of Marion Avenue, was drunk when he turned onto Ballston Avenue from Hamilton Street and hit the woman with his Ford F250 pickup truck about 3:40 p.m.

“It appears as if the vehicle was coming out of the McDonald’s lot where McDonald’s and Pizza Hut are connected,” city Police Lt. John Catone said.

The woman, who is not being identified pending notification of next of kin, sustained head and chest injuries and was taken to Saratoga Hospital, then transferred to Albany Medical Center, where she died about 8 p.m., police said.

Police said Nicholson stopped on Ballston Avenue after the accident and was cooperative. He was charged with first-degree vehicular manslaughter, a felony, and driving while intoxicated, but police said additional charges are possible after the investigation is completed.

He was being held tonight pending arraignment in City Court.

City police are investigating the crash, with assistance from a state police reconstruction unit. A portion of Ballston Avenue and Hamilton Street was closed until about 9 p.m. while police investigated.
