Halfmoon supervisor decides against re-election bid

There won’t be a fourth term for Halfmoon town Supervisor Mindy Wormuth.

The embattled Republican announced in a news release Friday she will not run again. She was facing a primary challenge from former Town Justice Kevin Tollisen, who was endorsed by the Halfmoon Republican Committee.

“While I have always been a fighter for the people of Halfmoon, I feel it is in mine and the town’s best interest to not run for re-election,” she said in the statement. “My boys are getting older and will be heading to college soon, and I want to enjoy the last few years with them without the stress of town politics getting in the way of my family life.”

In April, Wormuth was committed to fighting the good fight in a primary.

“The people of Halfmoon voted me in three times,” she said then. “It’s the people of the community who are going to make the final decision.”

Her going-away message notes the upcoming race for supervisor has “been a hotbed of contention,” but also points out no Democratic candidate had been endorsed yet.

“I have had the great pleasure of serving as supervisor of Halfmoon for the last six years,” Wormuth said, noting that Halfmoon has no town tax.

The laundry list of accomplishments she cites includes refinancing the town’s bonds, completing phase two of the water treatment plant and finishing a new town hall that runs completely on geothermal power.

While not included in her farewell message, Wormuth will also be remembered for her controversial endorsement of the daughter of a political donor to be the county’s animal shelter director and for stepping down from the county Board of Supervisors’ Public Works Committee, which she chaired, amid controversy over her sale of land to a developer.
