Prime time for high times has arrived.

Some skyrockets and sparkle bombs have already lit up skies in local communities, but most holiday fireworks shows begin tonight and run through the weekend.

Big shows are expected tonight at the Saratoga Casino and Raceway in Saratoga Springs and at Summer Jam at the West Mountain Ski Center in Queensbury.

John Kalament of Empire State Fireworks in Delanson will light up the skies at the raceway. He expects to be busy after dusk.

“I’ve shot the Empire State Plaza before, and I don’t know what they shoot down there now. We used to shoot off a lot of fireworks,” Kalament told The Gazette last month. “We shoot more at the harness track than we ever did down at the plaza. It’s the venue, shooting from the infield, just the scenery, the track. It’s just a great place to shoot.”

On Thursday — the 4th of July — celestial red glare will be seen at the Empire State Plaza, Clifton Common in Clifton Park, Lake George and several Adirondack communities. Albany police, expecting long lines of vehicular traffic for the plaza show, will begin road closures and parking restrictions near the plaza at 6 p.m. today.

Electronic message boards will be placed on various routes throughout the city to help motorists navigate downtown. Police officers will also be stationed at various locations for traffic control.
