FLOOD: Projections suggest more flooding for Montgomery County

Water level projections by the National Weather Service do not bode well for Montgomery County.

This morning the Mohawk River is projected to experience major flooding in Little Falls, which suggests the river will continue to flood as it flows east through Montgomery County. The threat of flooding caused mandatory evacuations in parts of Fort Plain on Monday night and a flood warning until Wednesday morning.

Also at risk for flooding was the Mohawk River in Schenectady, which was projected to reach “near flood stage” level later today.

This morning, the National Weather Service in Albany issued a flood warning for urban areas and small streams in southern Herkimer County and western Montgomery County. That warning remains in effect until 9:45 a.m.THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN ALBANY HAS ISSUED A

At 1:49 a.m., county officials in that area reported that flash flood waters had abated, but that small streams may still be flooding because of all the rain, according to the weather service. Some lingering flooding of urban areas and other poor drainage areas may be ongoing as well.

Some roads remain closed across southern Herkimer and western Montgomery counties.

Excessive runoff from heavy rains will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, highways and underpasses, the weather service says. Country roads and farmland along the banks of the creeks may also flood.

A flash flood watch remains in effect for most of upstate New York and western New England through this evening.
