Police investigate Niskayuna home burglaries

A string of burglaries this week in Niskayuna has police asking for help from the public.

Police are investigating four burglaries and one attempted burglary, all of which happened over a period of three days. The burglar or burglars made off with jewelry and cash.

The burglaries targeted single-family homes in multiple neighborhoods, including Avon Crest and Rosendale Estates, Deputy Police Chief Daniel McManus said.

Two of the burglaries happened Tuesday and Wednesday nights. In one of those cases, the homeowners were home and asleep at the time of the break-in.

Two other burglaries and the attempted burglary happened during the day Thursday, McManus said.

Some, if not all, of the burglaries involved forced entry, McManus said. The burglar in the attempted burglary is believed to have been scared off by a security system.

“Our investigators are following up on all available leads,” McManus said Friday. “We’re reaching out to other agencies in the area.”

McManus said they are also looking into any similarities with two unsolved burglaries in Niskayuna in May. Both of those burglaries possibly occurred while the residents were home. Those break-ins were on Rosehill Boulevard in Rosendale Estates.

In at least one of the May burglaries, the doors were locked and it appears a rear door may have been pried open, police said then. Cash and electronics were taken from downstairs rooms in both of those houses.

McManus said he recommends a common-sense approach to securing homes and property, including making sure lighting is appropriate and doors are secured.
