Job conference set up specifically to help veterans

Saratoga County will sponsor a hiring conference geared specifically to veterans next Wednesday at Empire State College in Saratoga Springs.

The county’s Employment Training Agency will be setting up one-on-one interviews for veterans with participating companies, which range from GlobalFoundries to the new Fresh Market opening this spring in Saratoga Springs.

“They could be employed or unemployed, or just looking for a career upgrade,” said Lisa Scaccia, the county’s employment and training director.

She said her office currently has 600 veterans registered as looking for work, and the pool seeking new opportunities is actually larger than that, because only people receiving unemployment benefits are referred to her office.

“Veterans traditionally have a higher unemployment rate than the general population,” Scaccia said.

Next week’s conference grew out of a Veterans Employment Task Force set up last summer between the employment and training office and the county Veterans Service Agency. They decided, based on feedback from veterans, that something other than the traditional mass job fair was needed.

“They were looking for employment opportunities, but they felt that the traditional job fair didn’t work,” Scaccia said.

So for the March 12 fair, Scaccia’s office asked participating companies to list the specific jobs they need to fill, and county officials will try to match them with the identified skills of the veterans who register for the event.

The positions being promoted include tellers at Ballston Spa National Bank and cleaners at Janitronics, commercial truck drivers at Logistics One, and mechanics and drivers at Upstate Transit.

For those with more specialized skills, GlobalFoundries is trying to fill manufacturing and engineering positions, Zayachek Cos. is seeking welders, and Espey Manufacturing is seeking electrical engineers and electronics technicians.

A full list of jobs available is on the Saratoga County website at

The conference will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Room 143, 113 West Ave., Empire State College, Saratoga Springs.

Veterans interested in participating should register electronically at [email protected], or they can call the county Employment and Training Office — which is at 152 W. High St. in Ballston Spa — at 884-4170.
