An official with a college in Georgia was named Monday as the new president at The College of Saint Rose.
The college introduced Carolyn Stefanco as the 11th president in school history. Stefanco comes to St. Rose from Agnes Scott College in Georgia, where she serves as the school’s vice president for academic affairs and its chief academic officer.
Stefanco called it “an honor and a privilege” to be named Saint Rose president. The appointment also allows the New Jersey native to return to this region of the country.
“When I came here to visit, it felt like I had come home,” Stefanco said.
She said she loved the feeling of community, as well as the quality of the institution.
Stefanco is to start work July 1. In the meantime, the school will continue to be led by interim president Margaret Kirwin.
The presidential search began last June, after then-President David Szczerbacki chose not to renew his contract for personal reasons.
Stefanco said that after taking office she intends to go on a listening tour to understand how various members of the community see the institution.
She also said she is interested in the school’s efforts to internationalize and she hopes to continue that work.
Stefanco served with Agnes Scott, a school in suburban Atlanta, for four years. She went there after holding leadership and teaching positions at California State University-Stanislaus; California Polytechnic State University and Wheaton College in Massachusetts.
At Cal State-Stanislaus, Stefanco was the founding dean of the school’s new College of Humanities and Social Sciences. She joined the Wheaton faculty in 1986 as an assistant professor of history.
She earned her doctorate in history from Duke University and her master’s in history from Binghamton University.
