After dazzling the hockey fans in Philadelphia at the Wells Fargo Center during the NCAA Frozen Four, Union defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere is now a Philadelphia Flyer.

Gostisbehere is giving up his senior season to sign an entry-level contract with the Flyers, it was announced Tuesday. He will report to the AHL’s Adirondack Phantoms on Thursday for the remainder of the season. The Phantoms play at home Friday against Bridgeport before closing the season Saturday in Hershey.

Gostisbehere, who is from Margate, Fla., was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Frozen Four after collecting a goal and four assists in helping the Dutchmen win their first NCAA title. He had a goal and two assists and had a plus-seven defensive rating in Saturday’s 7-4 victory over Minnesota in the championship game.

In 42 games this season, Gostisbehere had nine goals and 25 assists with a plus-33, tops among defensemen in the country. Gostisbehere was named co-winner of the ECAC Hockey Player of the Year and Best Defensive Defenseman. He was a first-team All-ECACH and was named to all-tournament teams in the ECACH, NCAA East Regional and Frozen Four. Gostisbehere was named a first-team All-America, and was a Hobey Baker Award top-10 finalist.

Last year, Gostisbehere won a gold medal with Team USA in the World Junior Championships.

Gostisbehere finishes his Union career with 22 goals and 60 assists in 119 games.

His signing comes on the same day that teammate Mat Bodie agreed to a deal with the New York Rangers.
