Books, awards, spaghetti and model houses were all part of Capital Region life in April 1987.
The books came from Roger and Pat Whitney and their pals at the Friends of the Schenectady County Public Library. The Friends were preparing for their annual spring book sale. The tradition continues; this year’s sale will be held Saturday, May 3, at the central library, 99 Clinton St.
Awards were given to local Boys’ Club favorites and to basketball players. The latter group, from Mont Pleasant High School, was honored at Schenectady’s City Hall for winning the Section II Class B Championship and the Capital Conference regional title.
Eileen Ovland and Liz Freiberger sampled uncooked spaghetti. As members of the Wilton Teen Center, the girls played the trick to drum up business for the center’s upcoming pasta supper. The spaghetti was cooked for the fundraising event.
Young people at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Junior High School had been working on folklore projects during the 1986-87 school year. Kids let parents and friends see their work during an open house on April 24. Kathy Wright and her friend Michele Shaw had spent the school year building a house — a replica of the Wright family residence became their home away from home.
Bill Manikas from the Rotterdam Police Department puts the topper on this edition of Capital Region Scrapbook. Manikas, a patrolman with the police department in ’87, showed off the department’s new baseball cap-style hat.
