STONE RIDGE, N.Y. — The family of a Fort Drum soldier from eastern New York says he has been killed while serving his second tour in Afghanistan.

Relatives of 24-year-old Sgt. Shawn Farrell tell local media that he was shot Monday during an attack in an eastern province. Farrell was from rural Stone Ridge in Ulster County.

The Department of Defense hasn’t confirmed Farrell’s death, but the international military coalition in Afghanistan says two of its service members died Monday in an attack in the country’s east.

Farrell joined the Army after graduating from Roundout Valley High School in 2008.

He served in the 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum in northern New York. He began his second tour in Afghanistan in November.

Farrell’s survivors include his wife and parents.
