People look at today’s teachers in two ways: 1. “They’re not teaching my kid right” or 2. “They’re doing great, but they don’t get paid enough for the things they are doing.” With the new teacher evaluations, the people who observe the teachers grade the teachers on how he or she is teaching and how kids are doing on state tests.
I don’t think they should be looking at the kids’ scores because the teacher is a person, not a number, just like the kids. I need my teachers to focus on the right things.
The three most important qualities a teacher should have are humor, love, and acceptance. Humor can cure any temper and make people laugh. When you have your teacher using humor, it feels like you were a turtle and now you have crawled out of your shell, enough to not shut down if you say the wrong answer.
Love can help someone who is about to cry. Love and humor can help turn that frown upside down; it can help make those eyes twinkle. Acceptance can help someone feel more important. Acceptance can help someone by saying, “Oh really? I did that the other day too.”
Humor, love, and acceptance can help anyone. A student or friend might come in with tears in his or her eyes and a teacher could help by saying a joke, giving them a squeeze, or saying something comforting, resulting in that student wanting to come back on his or her next bad day. A teacher almost always opens her caring, loving hands. A teacher is one of the strongest people ever.
Those are the three most important qualities a teacher should have. That’s what should be scored.
