SARATOGA SPRINGS & GLENS FALLS — Saratoga and Glens Falls hospitals announced today that they have agreed to begin a formal process to explore collaboration.

The two hospitals, just 19 miles apart, already work together in select areas, including comprehensive cancer care and coverage for medical specialties. In recent meetings, their separate boards agreed to begin exploring more opportunities and areas for collaboration.

“In today’s health care environment, hospitals must continually find better, smarter approaches to serve our patients and our communities,” said Saratoga Hospital President and CEO Angelo Calbone in a news release. “Strategic partnerships could prove the most effective way to align our strengths and make sure our communities continue to benefit from the latest advances in care.”

The exploration process will involve administrators, physicians and community stakeholders from both hospitals.

“This study will help us determine if there are mutual benefits that could strengthen each of our organizations and the communities we serve,” said Glens Falls Hospital President and CEO Dianne Shugrue in the release. “After a difficult 2013, we have emerged with a strong, stable and profitable operating plan for 2014, and can now focus on identifying potential synergies that both of our organizations may be able to take advantage of.”
