Town officials and members of the state Department of Environmental Conservation are investigating red water in parts of the Mohawk River.
“I was informed by our commissioner of public works about some sort of red substance in the Mohawk,” town Supervisor Chris Koetzle said Friday night. “We don’t know what it is at this juncture. The DEC has been informed, it is in their hands at this point.”
Koetzle said the colored water was discovered by a boater Thursday morning.
“When I was briefed on it, it was around Maalwyck Park,” Koetzle added. “It’s on Route 5 going out of Scotia, back into Glenville toward Amsterdam. That park is right on the Mohawk.”
Koetzle said the substance could be dye. “Being red, I just don’t know what else it could be,” he said.
Phone calls to the DEC Friday night were not returned.
The supervisor added he didn’t expect to hear new developments on the situation until Tuesday, after the Memorial Day weekend.
