Blue Jays select Shaker grad Hoffman in first round

Goes No. 9.

Shaker graduate and Latham native and Shaker High School graduate Jeff Hoffman was drafted ninth overall Thursday by the Toronto Blue Jays in the Major League Baseball first-year player draft.

Hoffman, a junior starting righty for East Carolina University this season, underwent Tommy John surgery in May and will be out until sometime in early 2015, but should then be assigned to one of Toronto’s minor-league affiliates.

He is the highest-drafted local player since Saratoga Central Catholic graduate Tim Stauffer was drafted fourth overall by the San Diego Padres in 2003.
