ALBANY — The state Department of Environmental Conservation has released a plan for the Adirondack segment of the North Country National Scenic Trail.

In March 1980, federal legislation authorized the establishment of the North Country National Scenic Trail as a component of the National Trails System. To date, Congress has authorized the establishment of eight National Scenic Trails, which are patterned after the Appalachian Trail.

The projected length of the North Country Trail is about 4,600 miles, and approximately 2,000 miles have been completed.

The Adirondack plan is for following 81 miles of existing trail and constructing 38 miles of new trails.

Comment is being taken until July 7 on the plan, available on the DEC website.
