Two federal lawmakers from New York are calling on Congress to extend the Erie Canal’s designation as a national heritage corridor.

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and U.S. Rep. Brian Higgins say they plan to introduce legislation to reauthorize the canal’s designation for another 15 years.

Congress named the canal a national heritage corridor in 2000. The designation will expire next year.

Gillibrand and Higgins said Friday that the distinction highlights an important part of the American heritage and encourages historical preservation.

The corridor encompasses 234 separate cities and towns and 34 national historic landmarks.
