PULASKI — State police say an upstate New York man drowned after he and his 6-year-old son fell into a river while fishing.
They say 37-year-old William Hibbard of Pulaski lost consciousness after guiding the boy back to shore around 11:30 a.m., Friday.
Two other fisherman pulled Hibbard from the Salmon River in Pulaski and tried to resuscitate him.
He was pronounced dead at a hospital less than an hour later.
The 6-year-old was treated at the scene and did not appear to be injured.
State police say witnesses saw Hibbard swimming and conscious as he and his son floated downstream about 100 yards.
Moments after Hibbard pushed his son to safety witnesses say he stopped swimming and his head appeared to be underwater.
