Authorities say the driver of an Adirondack river excursion bus that crashed has told police the vehicle’s breaks failed just before the accident that killed a 15-year-old employee.

State police tell The Post-Star of Glens Falls that the 77-year-old man driving the bus for Tubby Tubes told investigators that the brakes failed as he tried to slow down to make a turn Saturday on a road along the Hudson River in the town of Lake Luzerne.

The bus crashed and overturned, nearly landing in the river. Employee Hunter Scofield died when he was thrown from the bus.

The teen was one of 34 people aboard the modified school bus that transported customers for river tubing excursions.

The bus driver hasn’t been charged. The police investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing.
