More than 2,000 soldiers from the New York National Guard are gearing up for annual summer training.
The first deployment from the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team gets under way this weekend and continues through mid-August. Troops are headed to Fort Drum in northern New York and Fort Dix, New Jersey.
Maj. Gen. Patrick Murphy is the adjutant general of New York. He says the drills are designed to allow the soldiers to focus on skills useful when dealing with national armies and insurgent forces.
Murphy also says the training helps soldiers be ready to respond to state emergencies and natural disasters.
