Cuomo to visit GE site in Niskayuna today

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is scheduled to make a major economic development announcement today at GE Global Research headquarters in Niskayuna, several officials familiar with the announcement have confirmed.

The announcement is set for 10:30 a.m. at the research center at 1 Research Circle, according to an invitation that went out to local officials Monday.

Officials who received the invitation said they have no information about what the announcement entails.

A General Electric spokeswoman could not provide any details about the announcement Monday and a GE Global Research spokesman did not return a request for comment.

GE CEO Jeff Immelt declared Niskayuna the global headquarters for GE Research and Development in 2002 and invested $200 million in refurbishments.

In 2009, then-Gov. David Paterson visited the research center in Niskayuna to join GE in announcing a $100 million battery factory.

Earlier this year, the center was tapped by President Obama as a key industry partner on two new Midwest manufacturing innovation institutes. In that role, GE researchers in Niskayuna will contribute their technology and manufacturing expertise to boost advanced high-tech manufacturing here in the U.S. and stave off global competition.

The research center also played a role in luring New York City startup Quirky to open a third location in Schenectady a few months ago. The invention company pledged to bring 180 jobs to the city over the next three years. It is teaming with GE to launch an entire line of app-enabled products such as the recently launched Aros air conditioner.
