NEW YORK — A tentative agreement has been reached to avert a strike by workers at the nation’s largest commuter railroad.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo made the announcement after becoming personally involved in the contentious negotiations on Wednesday.
He gathered Long Island Rail Road union leaders and officials from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority at his Manhattan office Thursday.
That’s where the final details for a deal were worked out.
The unions had been working without a contract since 2010.
Specific details of the agreement were not immediately announced.
Cuomo had said it was imperative for the parties to settle their dispute and avoid a strike that would have caused a major transportation headache in the nation’s largest city.
