New York’s ethics board has approved a 90-day pre-election blackout on appearances in public service announcements by statewide officials and legislators who are also candidates.
The Joint Commission on Public Ethics regulations aimed at removing a campaign advantage apply to PSAs by nonprofit groups and the government.
Common PSAs call attention to issues like preventing domestic violence and bullying, energy conservation, charitable fund drives and disease prevention.
The restriction covers the governor, lieutenant governor, comptroller, attorney general, state legislators and state agency heads.
Spokesmen for the statewide incumbents say it doesn’t interrupt any announcements planned in this election season.
The rules exclude news, editorials, opinion columns, state agency websites, personal communications on social media and paid campaign ads.
