Amsterdam man charged with assaulting boy, 2

An Amsterdam man was accused Thursday of assaulting a 2-year-old boy in his care.

Police said Earl Stevens, 33, of 298 E. Main St., second floor, was charged after they received a call about 2:30 a.m. about an injured child. Officers responded, and the child was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment of a broken leg, a bruised forehead and contusions to the eye, back and legs, police said.

“No child should be subjected to this type of violence that the victim sustained,” said Amsterdam police detective Lt. Kurt Conroy.

After treatment, police said, the boy was released to his father.

Police said the child’s mother had left him for a few hours Wednesday night in the care of Stevens, the mother’s boyfriend. Stevens told the mother the child had fallen off a counter, police said, but they subsequently determined the injuries were inflicted by Stevens in the presence of his 6-year-old child.

Stevens was charged with second-degree assault, a felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, for allegedly committing the assault in the presence of his child. Additional charges are possible, pending the final medical diagnosis of the victim, police said.
