MONROE, N.Y. — The FBI has charged an upstate New York couple with extorting $60,000 from a developmentally disabled man through a bizarre scheme involving alcohol, drugs, cross-dressing and fabricated threats of violence from organized crime.

The Times Herald-Record of Middletown reports that federal agents on Wednesday arrested 28-year-old John Naudy and his 27-year-old wife, Nicole, at the couple’s home in the Orange County town of Monroe.

Authorities say the couple befriended the 26-year-old man two years ago through social media, then began withdrawing funds from his bank account after getting him drunk and injecting him with drugs. Officials say the Naudys also got the victim to dress in women’s clothing and convinced him the mafia would kill him and his family if he didn’t give the couple money.

It couldn’t be determined if the couple has a lawyer.
