State Office of General Services Commissioner RoAnn Desitito announced Thursday the former Summit Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility will be sold at public auction.
The auction will take place at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, in the Community Library in Cobleskill. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m.
Summit Shock is a former state correctional facility that sits on approximately 20 acres of land in the heart of Schoharie County and has a capacity of about 250 occupants.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo named Summit Shock as one of 11 state prisons to be closed in 2011 to save $184 million. The county lost 102 jobs as a result of the closing.
The parcel is within roughly 290 acres of Department of Environmental Conservation reforestation area. There are 38 buildings on the site that range in date of construction from the early 1960s to the late 2000s. They include a mess hall, dormitories, administrative offices, automotive and small engine shops and a facility maintenance shop.
The minimum bid for the facility is $95,000, and a $9,500 deposit — in the form of a certified check or bank check — is required to bid. The property is being sold “as-is,” according to a news release. A 5 percent broker’s commission will be paid by the state to a qualified real estate broker who represents the successful bidder at the time of the closing, the release said.
An open house at the facility, located at 137 Eagle St., will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. The news release encouraged prospective bidders to obtain professional advice prior to the public sale to assure compliance with building codes and any planned use of the property.
Bidder and broker affidavits must be submitted to OGS Legal Services by the close of business Monday, Aug. 18.
