A suspect in the Labor Day killing of a man on a street in the Vale neighborhood is in custody on unrelated charges, city police said Thursday.
The suspect has not been formally charged in the killing, however, police said and is not being publicly identified. The arrest is based on charges filed by another police agency.
Charges in the killing are expected next week, though, Schenectady police said. Police declined to give further information on the ongoing investigation.
The person is suspected in the Sept. 1 death of Danny Russell on Catherine Street. The 44-year-old New York City man was gunned down near Victory Avenue around 11:30 p.m.
Family members said Russell was in Schenectady for the weekend to celebrate his niece’s birthday. The family went to Lake George to spend time at the beach that day, then returned earlier in the evening. Russell left his brother’s apartment shortly before he was shot.
Family members have said they knew of no apparent motive for the shooting. Russell’s brother, Carlos Seebarran, said Thursday he became aware earlier that police had identified a suspect, but there was little time for him to focus on that.
“I was too busy mourning my brother,” Seebarran said.
He said family members have yet to be given further details, including the suspected killer’s name or a possible motive.
The family is otherwise doing as well as they can, he said.
“One day at a time,” Seebarran said, “because that’s what he would want.”
