State officials say attendance at New York state parks and historic sites hit 62 million in 2014, a 3-percent increase over the previous year.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday that the state’s 180 parks and 35 historic sites attracted 1.9 million more visitors than in 2013, when 60.1 million visits were recorded. Cuomo says visits to the 215 state-run properties are up 4.5 million since 2010, the year before he took office.
Overnight stays in 2014 at campgrounds operated by the state parks office were the highest on record, increasing by 2 percent to more than 594,000 nights occupied.
Cuomo announced last week during his state budget presentation that he wants to spend $110 million during the next fiscal year on the extensive backlog of infrastructure needs throughout the state parks system.
