Alex Barron tipped a Danny Federico left-point shot past Union goalie Colin Stevens at 6:32 of the third overtime Friday, rallying top-seeded and 11th-ranked Quinnipiac to a 4-3 victory over the Dutchmen in Game 1 of the ECAC Hockey tournament best-of-three quarterfinals into overtime on Friday at HighPoint Solutions Arena.
Quinnipiac takes a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series. Union, which had its 14-game ECACH tournament winning streak snapped, needs to win Game 2 Saturday to force a Game 3 Sunday.
Sam Anas scored two extra-attacker goals late in the third period, including one on the power play with 37.1 seconds left, to send the game into OT.
Matt Wilkins had a goal and assist in the first period for Union. He assisted on Mike Vecchione’s goal. Michael Pontarelli scored in the third.
Tim Clifton got a power-play goal for Quinnipiac in the second period.
Quinnipiac defenseman Devon Toews was awarded a penalty shot with 1:16 left in the second after he was pulled down from behind by Wilkins. Stevens got his right skate on the shot.
