Survivors of campus sexual assault are speaking out to encourage New York state to expand a policy on sexual assault and consent to all private colleges.

The women met with Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul at the Capitol on Monday before speaking with lawmakers about the need to address campus sexual violence.

One of them, a Columbia University student, was followed home by her attacker. Another Columbia student was assaulted by two men when she was intoxicated.

New York’s public universities recently adopted a new consent policy that requires a clear, affirmative agreement between partners. The SUNY system also has a new victim’s bill of rights and better training for law enforcement, faculty and students.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo wants lawmakers to impose the policies on private colleges and universities as well.
