DRESDEN — Authorities say two men were able to get out of their pickup truck just before it broke through the ice on Lake Champlain and sank to the bottom.

The Post-Star of Glens Falls reports that the Washington County Sheriff Office says a 74-year-old man from Schenectady and an 81-year-old man from Scotia were traveling in a pickup truck on the lake’s South Bay Thursday afternoon when the vehicle started to sink off the town of Dresden, on the Vermont border 65 miles northeast of Albany.

Deputies say the men made it out of the truck and walked to a nearby home to call police. Arrangements will be made to remove the truck from the lake.

Authorities recommend staying off lake ice because it’s weakening as temperatures rise.
