Fire destroyed a two-story barn Tuesday afternoon near the Hales Mills Country Club on Hales Mills Road in the town of Johnstown.
The barn stored landscape equipment, golf carts and tools for the club’s 18-hole golf course, according to Angelo Saccocio, one of the club’s owners. No one was in the barn at the time of the fire, Saccocio said.
As of Tuesday evening, Berkshire Fire Department Chief Bob Fancher said the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Fancher said the department received a call at around 2:30 p.m. When he arrived at the scene the barn was already fully involved and crews worked furiously for almost an hour to put out the blaze.
“With an old barn it can be really tough,” Fancher said, noting six local fire departments had been called to the scene. “Once a big fire like this gets going, it can be really tough to put it out.”
Saccocio wasn’t able to calculate how much the equipment in the barn was worth but he said, “That stuff was worth quite a bit of money.”
“We are really thankful that no one was injured,” he said.
Hales Mills County Club features an 18-hole golf course, restaurant and driving range. It is located off Route 29 between Steele Road and Hales Mills Road.
Jim Lathers, who lives next door to burned down barn on Hales Mills Road, said he glanced out his back window and saw a massive fire at around 2:30. He immediately dialed 911 and saw smoke billowing out of the barn.
“The barn was pretty big and the smoke was just flowing out of it,” he said. “The fire moved so fast and just destroyed the whole thing. It’s sad to see an old barn destroyed.”
