A Schenectady man beat his dog to death in March, authorities said Friday, and now he’s facing two felonies.
Daquan L. Eans, 30, of Barrett Street, was arrested Friday on one count each of aggravated cruelty to animals and tampering with physical evidence, both felonies.
He also faces two misdemeanor counts of torturing and injuring an animal.
Eans is accused of intentionally beating a brindle bullmastiff to death the evening of March 17 at his residence, according to papers filed in court.
The dog suffered multiple hemorrhages around its body, including its chest and neck. It died as a result, according to papers. A pathology report concluded the injuries were the result of blunt force trauma.
“These injuries were sustained over a period of time causing the animal to be tortured and cruelly beaten,” paperwork reads.
Police were called shortly afterward. Before police arrived, though, Eans allegedly destroyed evidence.
He is accused of dragging the dog’s body in a cage out of his building, through an alley and behind another house. He then left it there, according to court filings.
He also allegedly cleaned up physical evidence from the entryway floor leading up the stairs to his apartment.
“The evidence was cleaned up just minutes before police officers and Schenectady police animal control officers arrived on the scene,” charging paperwork reads.
Eans was arraigned Friday in Schenectady City Court and ordered held on $2,000 bail, He remained at the Schenectady County Jail Friday evening. He is being represented by the Schenectady County Public Defender’s Office.
