Union advances in NCAA men’s lacrosse

Face Liberty League-rival RIT on Saturday

Peter Richardson had two goals and three assists Wednesday, and Union College overcame a pair of three-goal deficits and a last-second third-quarter goal to defeat Nazareth, 15-12, in the first round of the NCAA Division III men’s lacrosse tournament at Frank Bailey Field.

The Dutchmen (14-4) advance to the second round, where they will face Liberty League-rival RIT in Rochester at 1 p.m. Saturday. The top-seeded Tigers routed Morrisville, 24-3.

Union was down, 9-6 and 10-7, at one point in the third quarter before rallying to tie it, 10-10. Nazareth (15-5) took an 11-10 lead when Will Fallo scored with seven-tenths of a second left in the quarter.

Richardson started the comeback with goal 3:37 into the fourth quarter. Kyle Mason broke the tie just over two minutes later with a behind-the-back shot. Nolan Stauffer scored a man-up goal with 8:29 to go. Jack Scheufele and Charlie Ross also scored in the fourth.
