MIDDLE ISLAND, N.Y. — Police had to rescue eight ducklings that strayed a little too far from their mother and ended up in a Long Island storm drain.

Newsday reports police were called around 9:30 a.m. Sunday when 22-year-old Kelly Hagan noticed the mother duck hovering over a storm drain in Middle Island.

She says she noticed the ducklings huddled in a ball in the muddy drain and called for help.

Suffolk Officer Robert Stahl lifted the grate and pulled the ducklings to safety.

The family took off before the eighth duckling was rescued, but Stahl gave it to Hagan who returned it to the family.
