A medical transportation company wants to move its headquarters out of Latham and into Schenectady, where it does the most business.

Amazing Grace Transportation has been operating its business on Route 7 near Albany International Airport since 2010, but owner Augusta Amasha said relocating closer to Schenectady just makes sense.

“We service a lot of communities around Schenectady and end up going to Sunnyview [Rehabilitation Hospital] and other places here a lot,” he said. “And most of our drivers also live in Schenectady, so it seemed like a good idea to be here.”

The company wants to occupy an old auto detailing facility on State Street near the Crosstown Plaza. The space has been vacant for about nine months, Amasha said, and would need light renovations.

Amazing Grace needs a change in tenancy review from the Schenectady Planning Commission before it can move, and is on the agenda for this Wednesday. With that approval the company could move in by the end of the month, Amasha said.

The office would have six employees, but the company employs another 18 drivers. It would be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

While the company serves patients from the entire Capital Region, most of its business is in Schenectady. That’s because the company deploys wheelchair-accessible vans, popular among people who have appointments at Sunnyview. The company also accepts Medicaid vouchers for payment, so it serves a large portion of lower-income patients.

“Taxicabs take Medicaid, but they can’t easily accommodate a wheelchair, so we see a huge demand,” Amasha said.

The company has even driven as far as Syracuse, Oneonta and Buffalo to drop off patients who were at Sunnyview for an extended period of time.
