Saratoga Hospital is looking at a major expansion northward, adding 16 acres of land north of the hospital and building a new large medical office building there.
The project at Myrtle and Morgan streets would require approval from the City Council to become part of the hospital’s planned unit development. The council voted Tuesday to refer it to the city Planning Board for an advisory recommendation.
A medical office building would be the latest expansion for the hospital, which is undergoing a dramatic transformation with a new intensive care unit added last spring, and a new suite of operating rooms due to open this winter. A new emergency room opened in 2009.
“We’ve been successful, we have great physicians and staff here, and people are coming,” said Kevin Ronayne, the hospital’s vice president for operations and facilities.
The hospital has an option to buy the 16 acres of vacant land, which border an apartment complex, town houses and part of a golf course. Ronayne said the building will be designed to fit into the neighborhood.
The three-story building is needed so that staff doctors’ offices that are now in rented space can be located closer to the hospital, which is out of office space. It should also be more convenient for patients, Ronayne said.
“We have now 10 leases in and around the city of Saratoga Springs, where our staff is off-site. It doesn’t really work very well for the hospital in terms of attracting and retaining physicians and other staff members,” hospital attorney Matthew Jones told the council. “It will bring our staff nearer the hospital, literally within walking distance, so that’s the principle motivation behind it.”
The building, which hasn’t yet been designed, would contain between 60,000 and 75,000 square feet of space. Ronayne said there isn’t yet a cost estimate.
If all goes well with the city approval process, the hospital hopes to break ground on the building early next summer, he said.
