Two Schenectady County men have been arrested in connection with an assault and robbery in East Greenbush last month.

The incident occurred around 1 a.m. July 15 on Hampton Avenue, across from Onderdonk Park, according to police. Two men — ages 29 and 31 — who were smoking cigarettes and talking on park benches reported that three unidentified “youths” jumped from a tan Chevy Trail Blazer and assaulted them. A backpack containing personal property was physically ripped off one of the men, and both men sustained injuries, police said.

Austin D. Kownack, 20, of Duanesburg, was arrested today and charged with two counts each of robbery, larceny and second-degree assault, according to a news release. He was arraigned in East Greenbush Town Court and taken to the Rensselaer County jail. He waived a preliminary hearing and will return to court Sept. 3.

Mark J. Matteo, 19, of Schenectady, was arrested three days after the incident, police said. He was charged with second-degree robbery and second-degree assault and was also sent to the county jail.

Police said an investigation is ongoing to identify the third suspect.
