New York State Police say a 50-year-old Massachusetts man has drowned while swimming in an Adirondack river with his family.

Troopers say Thursday that Dale Calverley of Wayland, near Boston, was swimming Monday at the base of Buttermilk Falls on the Raquette River in the Hamilton County town of Long Lake, 95 miles northwest of Albany.

Police say Calverley’s family noticed he was floating face-down in the river and tried to revive him. The county coroner pronounced him dead at the scene.

Troopers say an autopsy conducted Tuesday at St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam, New York, determined the cause of death to be asphyxia due to drowning. The county coroner ruled his death accidental.
