Late goal allows Sacred Heart to tie Union 1-1

Jacob Brightbill scored with 1:20 left in regulation time, helping Sacred Heart earn a 1-1 tie against Union in the college hockey season opener for both teams Friday at Messa Rink.

Brightbill beat goalie Alex Sakellaropoulos from close range eight seconds after Pioneers goalie Brett Magnus was pulled for an extra attacker.

Freshman Cole Maier scored in the first period for the Dutchmen. Maier left the game in the third period, favoring his right knee.

Dutchmen senior co-captain Matt Wilkins was given a five-minute major and game misconduct for contact to the head at 4:59 of the second period.

Sakellaropoulos made 17 saves.

Union hosts third-ranked Boston University at 7 p.m. Saturday.
