‘Pan’ lacks magic at the box office; ‘The Martian’ soars

LOS ANGELES — There is no Neverland magic at the box office for “Pan.”

The expensive fantasy earned $15.5 million in its opening weekend, according to Rentrak estimates Sunday. The Joe Wright-directed film cost an estimated $150 million to produce.

Ridley Scott’s space adventure “The Martian” kept the top spot for the second week in a row with a solid $37 million, bringing its domestic total to $108.7 million.

“Hotel Transylvania 2” took second place in its third weekend in theaters with $20.3 million, bumping its total to $116.8 million. “Pan” came in at No. 3.

Nancy Meyers’ workplace comedy “The Intern” earned $8.7 million, and the border thriller “Sicario” brought in $7.4 million, rounding out the top five.

Meanwhile, the high-wire spectacle “The Walk” faltered in wide release, with $3.7 million.
