Schenectady Police Chief Brian Kilcullen submitted his letter of retirement to Mayor Gary McCarthy on Tuesday.

Kilcullen’s last day with the department is Oct. 30. He plans to start his new job as chief of Rutland, Vermont’s police department on Nov. 2.

“It has been an honor and pleasure to have served as your police chief for nearly three years,” Kilcullen said in the letter, dated Oct. 13, to McCarthy. “It has been a rewarding experience for me serving the people of the city of Schenectady for nearly 22 years. I will miss being part of your management team.”

In the letter, Kilcullen said his phone number will remain the same and that McCarthy can reach out to him anytime regarding any issues that arise.

The Rutland Police Department has 40 officers, compared to Schenectady’s 148. McCarthy said he plans to conduct a search outside of the department for the city’s next chief of police.

Kilcullen has served as chief since January 2013 and first joined the department in February 1994. Kilcullen, a Schenectady native, earned a gross salary of $134,393 in 2014, making him the 10th highest-paid city employee.
