Canines are winning the contest for human hearts in New York state.
A Siena College poll released Monday finds that 57 percent of New Yorkers consider themselves “dog people” while 17 percent call themselves “cat people.”
Overall, 42 percent of respondents say they have a pet. Thirty percent have a dog, 20 percent live with a cat, and 10 percent live with at least one of each.
When it comes to how they treat their furry loved-ones, 42 percent of pet owners say they have cooked “special” meals for their companion animals, 44 percent have celebrated a pet’s birthday and 24 percent say they have dressed up their pet in a costume.
The Sept. 1-28 telephone poll of 800 state residents has a margin of error of 4.3 percentage points.
