A white snowy owl found injured in Amsterdam this morning is on its way to a sanctuary in St. Johnsville, according to the Montgomery County SPCA.
SPCA shelter manager Anthonio Baker said he received a call about the injured bird just before 8 a.m and arrived on scene soon after.
He said the owl was found by a work crew on the north side of the Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook pedestrian bridge in Amsterdam.
So far, little information is available. Baker said the owl was trying to spread its wings, but could not extend them completely. The bird allowed him to pick it up and put it in a carrier, he said.
He said he does not believe snowy owls to be indigenous to the area.
The bird was being transported to a bird of prey rescue in St. Johnsville.
This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
