Visual arts

• Two superb violinists on the same weekend: classical/jazz/rock sensation Charles Yang with the Empire State Youth Orchestra at Proctors (Jan. 30) and the brilliant and passionate Stefan Jackiw in recital in the Union College Concert Series (Jan. 31).

• The much-awarded guitarist Ekachai Jearakul of Thailand, the first Asian to win the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America’s international competition, is sure to be phenomenal. (March 20, Massry Center)

• French pianist Lise de la Salle may not be well known locally, but critics worldwide have called her performances exhilarating with uncommon sensibility. (April 20, Troy Savings Bank Music Hall). Of course you can’t go wrong with those other piano stalwarts, Paul Lewis (March 18) or Emanuel Ax (April 24) both in the Union College Concert Series.

• The Albany Symphony Orchestra teams up with the Albany Pro Musica for Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 (“Resurrection”) in a concert that will undoubtedly astound. (May 14, Palace Theatre)

• String quartets galore: Harlem (Feb. 4, Troy), Modigliani (Feb. 21, Union), Danel (Feb. 27, Zankel), Dover (Feb. 28, Union), Ebene (March 10, Union), Ariel (March 12, Friends), Ying (April 9, Zankel), and Artemis (April 10, Union). All terrific, so it might be down to a coin toss.
