Fonda football's Derby earns all-state honors again

Fonda-Fultonville senior defensive end Jack Derby (50) earned all-state Class C first-team football honors for the second year in a row.

Fonda-Fultonville senior defensive end Jack Derby has earned all-state Class C first team football honors for the second year in a row.

Derby is among Section II’s six Class B, C and D first team selections by the New York State Sportswriters Association, but the lone athlete in the group to repeat.

“He’s a combination of quickness and strength, but his biggest asset is his motor,” Fonda-Fultonville coach Tom Carpenter said of the Daily Gazette All-Area first team pick. “He goes hard all the time.”

Derby was tabbed the Section II Class C Defensive Player of the Year and the league’s South Division Player of the Year after collecting 39 solo tackles, 28 assists and five fumble recoveries. Derby also anchored the Braves offensive line from his center position.

Class C all-state first team honors went to Greenwich running back Mike Brandow and Holy Trinity defensive end Kevan Mooney, as well.

Class B first-team laurels went to Schuylerville linebacker Skyler Bateman and Schalmont safety Zac O’Dell. Whitehall defensive tackle Jake Gregory made the Class D first team.

Greenwich kicker Linnea D’Acchille was among the second team selections.

Cazenovia quarterback/defensive end Jake Sheffner (Class B), Chenango Forks quarterback/linebacker Tony Silvanic (Class C) and Tioga running back/defensive back Jesse Manuel earned state player of the year honors.
