Due to extremely high winds in the New York metropolitan area, the New York Racing Association has canceled Aqueduct Racetrack’s live racing program this afternoon.
With sustained winds of 30 mph and gusts in excess of 50 mph, track management and jockey representatives have jointly decided to cancel the day’s card in the interest of ensuring the safety of our equine and human athletes.
“We were hoping that the wind would die down in time for racing this afternoon,” Martin Panza, senior vice president of Racing Operations said in a statement, “but we decided it was in our best interest to exercise caution rather than put our horses and jockeys in any kind of danger.”
Today’s feature race, the Grade 3, $200,000 Top Flight Invitational Handicap, will be rescheduled for a later date.
Simulcasting will remain available at Aqueduct Racetrack and Belmont Café.
