Sonia Singh said she was sleeping when a fire broke out in the attic of her home on Euclid Avenue in Schenectady.
If it wasn’t for her 10-year-old daughter, Nadira, Singh said they might not have made it out safely in time.
“We were sleeping and someone was banging on the door,” Singh said as she watched firefighters battle the blaze. “She said, ‘Mom, someone is at the door.’ I ran upstairs because I didn’t know what was going on.”
When Singh saw the fire, the two ran out of the house shortly before firefighters arrived. Nadira still had her robe on as they stood on the sidewalk.
“I have no idea about the damage,” Singh said. “Everything is all wet.”
Singh lives on the second floor of the house with her daughter.
Schenectady firefighters responded to reports of a fire at 1905-07 Euclid Ave. around 11 a.m. on Monday. The fire was contained to the attic and under control in about 20 minutes, Fire Chief Ray Senecal said.
Senecal said Monday afternoon that the cause is undetermined but that it’s not suspicious.
Other than Sonia and Nadira Singh, no one else was home when the fire started. A neighbor alerted the Singhs of the fire and called 911.
The structure of the two-family home is stable, according to Building Inspector Eric Shilling. Repairs are needed to the attic and roof, he said.
There is water damage throughout the building. Neighboring buildings were not damaged.
Firefighters rescued a cat named Frankie from the home, who belongs to a woman who gave her name as Haley. She lives on the first floor of the home and was not home at the time of the fire.
The house at 1905-07 Euclid Ave. is owned by Robert Hicks, according to property records. The house is located off Guilderland Avenue in the Bellevue neighborhood.
