Scotia-Glenville kicks off slew of Memorial Day parades

Lt. Col. Nicholas Dean, the 109th Airlift Wing inspector general, will serve as the grand marshal for the 88th annual Scotia-Glenville Memorial Day Parade, beginning today at 6:15 p.m. in the village of Scotia.

The first in a long list of holiday events, the Scotia-Glenville parade will begin on Route 5 and proceed east through the village.

Dean, a Glenville resident, also serves as New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force commander at the Stratton Air National Guard Base in Glenville.

A total of 2,000 people are expected to participate in the march, including DownBeat Percussion, halftime performers for the National Football League’s Buffalo Bills. The group will perform throughout the parade and in concert at Memorial Park in Scotia at 7:30 p.m.

Serving as honorary grand marshals will be 90-year-old Scotia resident Ray Languell, who served in the U.S. Navy from 1949-55, and 106-year-old Glenville resident Marion Buchanan, a member of the Women Army Corps from 1943-48.

TODAY

•SCOTIA-GLENVILLE — The Scotia-Glenville Memorial Day Parade will be held at 6:15 p.m. on Mohawk Avenue in the village of Scotia.

•WATERFORD — The Waterford Memorial Day Parade will be held at 7 p.m. .

THURSDAY

•ROTTERDAM — The town of Rotterdam Memorial Day parade will be held at 6:30 p.m. It will begin at Mohonasen High School and conclude at the Rotterdam Town Hall on Sunrise Boulevard.

•SARATOGA SPRINGS – The Saratoga Springs Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. at Union Avenue and Nelson Avenue.

•SCHOHARIE — The Memorial Day Parade will be held at 6:30 p.m. A brief ceremony will follow at Veteran’s Park, corner of Main and Spring streets. The Grand Marshall is the town of Wright/Schoharie Valley Lions Club.

FRIDAY

•GREENWICH — The Greenwich Memorial Day Parade will be held from 6-7 p.m. on Main Street. The event is organized by the Men’s Auxiliary of the Legion of Greenwich Post #7291 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Greenwich Post #515 of the American Legion.

•SOUTH GLENS FALLS — The South Glens Falls Memorial Day Parade will be held at 6 p.m., beginning at the corner of Main St. and William St., and will proceed down Main St. to the Village Triangle Park.

•STILLWATER — The Stillwater Memorial Day Parade will be held at 6 p.m. Hudson Avenue and Route 4 will be closed for the evening.

SATURDAY

•BALLSTON SPA — The Ballston Spa Memorial Day Parade will be held at 9 a.m. The parade will proceed down Milton Avenue over the bridge at Kaydeross Creek, and will be followed by a ceremony at the village’s war memorials on Low Street.

•LAKE GEORGE — The Lake George Memorial Day Parade will be held at 11:30 a.m. The parade will form on Westbrook Road and proceed north on Canada Street to Shepard Park.

•DUANESBURG— The town of Duanesburg Memorial Day Parade will begin at 11 a.m. on Cooley Heights and proceed down Route 395 through the village of Delanson to Memorial Park. The Delanson Fire Company will host a field day at the conclusion of the parade.

SUNDAY

•FLORIDA — The annual Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park. An ice cream social will begin at 4 p.m.

MONDAY

•SCHENECTADY — A ceremony honoring veterans will be held at 10 a.m. at Vale Cemetery, 907 State St. The speaker is retired Lt. Colonel Edward Bonk, nurse anesthesiologist. The program includes flag ceremony, national anthem, Pledge of Allegiance, rifle salute and taps.

•ALBANY — The Albany Memorial Day Parade will be held from 9:30 a.m.-noon. The parade will form at Ontario Street and Central Avenue, and proceed east on Central Avenue to Washington Avenue and then conclude at N. Hawk Street just east of the Capitol Building. The reviewing stand will be at the State Education building on Washington Avenue.

•ROTTERDAM — A Memorial Day service will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the Rotterdam Town Hall Monument on Sunrise Boulevard.

• BROADALBIN — The “Stay the Course” veteran’s benefit bike ride will begin and end at the Broadalbin-Perth High School, 100 Bridge St. Registration will be held 6-7:30 a.m. the day of the ride, which will be followed by the Broadalbin Memorial Day Parade will follow.

The cost is $10 for a 10-mile loop or $30 for the 30-mile loop, veterans ride for free and active duty members are half price. The proceeds will benefit the Mountains to Miracles Veteran’s Foundation.

• BETHLEHEM — The town of Bethlehem Memorial Day Parade will be held at 11 a.m. The parade will begin at the Elsmere Fire House on Poplar Drive, and proceed down Elsmere Avenue to Kenwood Avenue and eventually Delaware Avenue, ending at Bethlehem Veterans Memorial Park.

• GLEN — The Glen Conservancy will sponsor the annual Memorial Day Parade beginning noon, followed by a short ceremony.

•LANSINGBURGH — The Lansingburgh Memorial Day Parade will be held at 11 a.m. It will begin at 123rd Street and Fifth Avenue.

• NORTH GREENBUSH — The North Greenbush Memorial Day Parade will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Streamview Lane and West Sand Lake Road, and continue down Marion Avenue to Brookside Avenue before ending on Main Avenue.

• WATERVLIET — Watervliet’s Annual Memorial Day Parade will be held at 10 a.m. The parade starts at the Watervliet High School and ends at Veteran’s Park.
