Brian McCann delivered an RBI double in the 11th inning and the New York Yankees hung on for a 7-6 victory against the Cleveland Indians on Saturday before 32,951 fans at Progressive Field.
With two outs in the 11th, Carlos Beltran singled through the right-side shift and was replaced by pinch-runner Ronald Torreyes, who easily scored the go-ahead run on McCann’s ringing hit to right off reliever Tommy Hunter — the Indians’ sixth reliever.
Aroldis Chapman pitched part of three innings for the win, beginning with the final out of the ninth. In that inning, the Yankees (43-44) caught a huge break when — with
Andrew Miller pitching — the Indians’ Francisco Lindor was called out for baserunner’s interference by crashing into third baseman Chase Headley.
Without the interference, the Indians would have at least have had the winning run at third base with one out.
The Yankees had gone ahead 6-5 in the sixth on Brett Gardner’s two-strike, bases-loaded triple off reliever Dan Otero, an inning keyed by a pinch-hit walk by Alex Rodriguez — his first appearance in a game since serving as Tuesday’s designated hitter in Chicago.
Yankees starter CC Sabathia had a fourth straight subpar start, charged with five runs in 52⁄3 innings.
But All-Star setup man Dellin Betances gave up the tying run in the seventh on Jose Ramirez’s two-out, RBI single on an 0-2 curveball. Shortstop Didi Gregorius prevented the go-ahead run from scoring one batter later, with a diving stop of a Juan Uribe grounder he turned into a force play.
Indians All-Star starter Danny Salazar was charged with six runs in 5 2⁄3 innings.
Batting in the No. 5 spot for just the second time this season, the hot-hitting Gregorius belted a two-run homer in a three-run third to give the Yanks a 3-1 lead.
Cleveland scored three times in the bottom half to go ahead 4-3.
